How She Died

The upper half of her casket lay open. It was finely decorated, made out of mahogany and had silver rails. Half of the casket covered in flower pedals, and roses from those who loved her. If I Die Young played in the background, the music was coming from her ipod that was set to play every single one of her favorite songs. Of all songs to play this one just so happened to be the one to play in the background as her little sister talked of her life. Although it was short, it was well lived.

Her two best friends spoke next, they spoke of the good times they had together, the first time they had met and their favorite inside jokes with her. It was more of a happy funeral because everyone only had happy memories of her. Slowly the stories ended and her father finished off with his final words. One by one everyone lined up for his or her last look at the beautiful young girl.

As she lay there, her blonde curly hair fell perfectly at her shoulders as it always had. She was wearing earrings because she swore her ears were ugly without them. Her best friends composed her outfit it was her favorite. The mortician did a great job on her make-up; it looked just like she had done it herself. Her skin looked flawless, soft and… young. She looked exactly like her everyday self. If her body could be more relaxed, it would just look as though she had fallen asleep after a long day. After talking to the doctors… that is what happened.

“We have to go home,” Macy, said pulling out of the arms of her sister, Elaina, and best friend, Avery. She wiped her tears and unlocked the van. In silence, the three of them got into the van and buckled their seat belts.

The radio played and nobody dared to touch it. What once was a playful little spat over what station to listen to, was not even something they bothered to deal with. There was a secret rule that nobody speak when a friend’s heart gets broken. Therefore, during the whole ride, there was complete silence except for the radio. Over the radio came their song, and she burst into tears in the middle of an intersection. She closed her eyes to let the tears leak out of her body the last thing she saw was the light turn, she assumed it was yellow, so she sped up. Immediately the silence was broken as Alaina and Avery screamed, “Macy don’t-“

The car disintegrated on impact. The passenger seat completely caved in, leaving Avery both unconscious and trapped inside the car. The windows were blown in with glass projected everywhere, giving all three of the girls scattered cuts. There were bruises on all of their chests from the restraint of the seat belts, and although Avery was already unconscious, after taking the full blow of the accident. Macy took one look at the blood that was dripping from her best friend and slowly started slipping. “Macy, please stay with me!” Alaina screamed from the back seat. She remained conscious as she called 911, and shook her sister. In less than a minute both Macy and Avery were gone. There Alaina sat; alone to fend for herself until the police or medics arrived. She took one look at the vehicle that they had hit them and thanked God that they had survived the crash… Alaina wondered how they came out without severe injuries and how Avery was even alive.Three hours later Macy awoke with her sister at her side. “What happened?” Macy asked confused as to why she was in a hospital room.

“Your guy’s song came on.  You started bawling, ran a red light and we got hit by a semi truck.”

“A semi, on what side did we get hit?”

“Passenger side, but Avery is okay she is just still unconscious and has a few broken bones. I really don’t know how she is still alive.”

“So what is wrong with me?”

“The doctors say that you just passed out. They don’t know why, I’m guessing it was the sight of blood.” Macy shook her head that scenario made sense. One time she had cut her hand open catching a knife and almost passed out before she could even say she was hurt. She hated the sight of blood.

“So why am I hooked up to the machines?” She said looking at the cords coming from her chest.

“They were monitoring you to see why you passed out, and then they noticed your heart slowing down, so they are keeping you for about a day to see if they can do anything.” Macy shook her head in understanding. Although she had scrapes and bruises on her and she had been crying before the crash, she still looked perfect. Her blonde curly hair lay perfectly just above her shoulders. Her face was flawless without the cuts and her make-up still seemed to remain in tact.

“Well I cannot take this silence, is there anything on television?” Macy said looking past her sister to see the screen was on mute but there was a moving picture.

“Not really… the only thing that didn’t have to do with sex, drugs or murder was star wars.”

“Oh okay, wait there are six movies, which one are we watching?”

“The third movie?” Alaina said slowly. The movie returned, and the girls watched the ending events of the movie unfold.

“Anakin, you’re breaking my heart.” They heard Padme cry from the T.V. and slowly Macy started to tear up. Her heart started breaking again the minute she thought about it. Tears streamed down her face as she watched. The movie ended and Macy just let the tears fall.

“So why did she die?” Macy asked her sister.

“Well they were doing a behind the scenes thing during commercials and apparently we are never told, but everyone believes that she died from a broken heart.”

“I can see how she could die of a broken heart. I would not be surprised it my heart slowly started to give up like hers. Nobody would know why I died, but I would, I would know I died of a broken heart” Macy did not make a sound just let the tears fall. It was about 12:45 when the sisters fell asleep next to each other in the hospital room. At four thirty, the doctors awaked Alaina. They were surrounding her bed and speaking fast. Alaina tried to wake herself up to understand what they were saying.

“Her heart is slowing down.” One of the doctors said, the speaker was male.

Another spoke, it was a female; “we are losing her.”

The male doctor replied, “It’s as if her heart is just giving up on us.”

“Other than the cuts and bruises, she’s perfectly healthy. I don’t understand…” then there was a long monotonous beep, and that is all Alaina heard as she fell back into her dreams.

Alaina again woke hours later with a rough shake of her shoulder. When she opened her eyes, she saw Avery leaning over her. “Alaina, the morgue is here to take Macy. Alaina’s tired eyes shot open and looked at her sister, no… she’s not dead, she is just asleep. Alaina grabbed her sister’s hands realizing they were ice cold, so was every other part of her body. Immediately she started crying uncontrollably.

“What? How? When? Why?” What she had heard last night quickly came to mind.

“They don’t know, they say she was asleep when her heart just started to give up. They said it was probably something recent, but none of the injuries from the accident are anywhere near her heart.”

“It was definitely her heart that gave up, not any other organ.” Alaina shook her head in disbelief and looked at Avery as if she knew something Avery did not. “What do you know that I don’t?”

Slowly the words spilled out of Alaina’s mouth, as she did not have any proof of her theory, the only proof was the fact that it was her heart. Although she had no proof, Alaina knew she was right, “Macy died last night… of a broken heart.”

The casket closed and the pallbearers lifted the casket and carried her out right behind everyone else. Everyone slowly meandered over to their cars as the hearse was loaded with the casket. One by one the cars filed out of the parking lot of the funeral home. The grave sight was not far, so the ride there was short. In the car, they decided that they were going to tell Alaina and Macy’s dad together that what had happened last Wednesday night at church, of course, he knows what happened with the accident, but he did not know about the break up.

It was warm outside as they stood around the grave. The girls dropped their roses onto her casket and walked away, trying not to make any eye contact with anyone else. As everyone left to go to the reception that was mostly for close friends and family, they stopped Macy and Alaina’s dad.

“There is something we never told you about Wednesday night. The reason we got into the crash was that Macy and Ethan broke up that night she was a mess, but drove home anyways. Their song came on the radio and she lost it. She missed the light and a semi truck hit us, I really do not know how we survived that, Avery should have died. Anyways that night in the hospital she was fine, I mean the doctors said that her heart was slowing down, but we just thought it was shock or something. We then watched that movie Star Wars together and we talked about how that one girl died of a broken heart. She told me that she could die right then of a broken heart. I thought she was just over exaggerating until Avery told me what had happened.” Alaina said in what seemed like one breath.

Avery continued for her best friend, “We tried to talk to the doctors to see if it was possible, but they did not believe us. However, they have no other reason for her heart to have just given up like that. Mr. Willey, your daughter died of a broken heart. His eyes started turning red and Avery could see Ethan’s reflection in his eyes, as he took off toward him.

Mr. Willey did not do anything but talk to the boy. As the girl watched Ethan his facial expression changed, he had obviously not heard the whole story as to how she got in the hospital, because his face went from shocked to devastate. Ethan’s eyes started to get red and puffy. As they passed by to go sit and talk on a bench the girls heard Ethan whimper, and watched their best friends casket get loaded into the ground.

A year later, the girls returned to her grave to check out the newly planted gravestone. It read:
Macy Willey
January 7, 1994 – May 2, 2012
Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray
The Lord my soul to keep, if I shall die before
I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take.
Beloved: Sister, Daughter and Friend
Died of a Broken Heart…

They laid flowers at her grave, and looked up to see Ethan coming over with flowers and something in his hand. He set the flowers down and placed a tiny silver ring in the soil right in front of the gravestone. It was their promise ring, “I never planned on breaking that promise… I hope you know.” He let out a sniff and rubbed his nose. He knew that had things gone according to plan, she would have a ring on her finger and would be picking out a white dress for the next few months.

He took one last look at her gravestone… “Died of a Broken Heart,” he let out a sigh and sat down in the grass. The girls left him to talk and tell her what he really should have said a little over a year ago.
